A Johnny Cash song, this tune was covered by the Grateful Dead starting in 1972 and not letting up...always seems to bring out those great bluegrass runs and country double stops from Jerry ala' Cumberland Blues...one of the few cover songs done by the Dead that is superior to all other versions that I've heard...

Seems like I remember reading once...
that when asked, Jerry said the one song he would never want to play again was Big River.
That seemed odd to me because they always seemded to rip it up and Jerry always sounded like he was enjoying himself.

Great song for sure, but I wouldn't say its superior to Johnny Cash.. a different arrangment is all. I enjoy both the Dead's and the Man In Black's... Cash did some great performances plus I love his singing.

Strat,

Please give this version a listen and tell me it doesn't belong in your top 5. I prefer the aud over the sbd as Jerry is a little louder. On top of that the whole show is killer. Opens with Playin' -Crazy-Playin.

nice...I gave the aud and the board a spin...Mydland is overpowering in the sbd mix unfortunately...Big River is such a linear tune...it's so hard to rank a tune like this, however this is one of the best versions out there...I would still put the 79 and 77, perhaps the 73 at the very top, after that it's arbitrary for the next best 7-10 versions...I'm positive that I'm forgetting about a few smokers I've heard along the way...
